Tokaku is the son of Unkoku Tohan (see Christie's New York, 21 September, 2006, lot 138), whom he succeeded. He called himself Sesshu VII.

Tokaku's paintings are very rare. For a screen by the artist with a similar subject, see Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art, ed., Unkokuha no keifu - Sesshu no kokeisha tachi/Unkoku School - The successors of Sesshu style (Yamaguchi: Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art, 1986), no. 46.
