Notes

Pauline Desmarquet Auzou was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault. She first exhibited at the Salon in 1793 and continued to do so until 1817, being awarded a First Class medal in 1806. She was a teacher, primarily with female students, and received numerous commissions, both from the French State and from other institutional and noble clients.

This drawing was among a group of studies which descended through the artist's family to the sale at Christie's in 1999.
