Item Overview

Description

Paul Hartigan Chromo 03 ink on vinyl title inscribed, signed and dated 1999 verso 920mm x 900mm The kaleidoscopic Chromo 03 comes from a body of work executed in 1999 called Hybrid, a term that refers to something of mixed origin, often achieved through experimentation and particularly in relation to the creation of hardier plant life. Genetically modified cell structures are magnified many times for our perusal revealing the sinister beauty of replicating cells and calling to mind the inherent risks in the modifying process that we don't understand. The blended and floating cells harbour potential evil over which the symbol of infinity, by its nature unbroken and perpetual, hovers, and is truncated by the picture plane. Our eye completes the cycle of movement rather than accepting a halted infinity. What was seen then as a radical utilization of computer generated imagery and inks sprayed onto vinyl, these earlier works of Paul Hartigan's, paved the way for a generation of younger artist's such as Sara Hughes, Jessica Pearless and Hannah and Aaron Beehre. Paul Hartigan is represented by Tinakori Gallery in Wellington, and is responsible for many site specific installations around the country including Colony in the School of Engineering building at the University of Auckland. Paul Hartigan is represented by Tinakori Gallery, Wellington. EF
