Item Overview

Description

Patrick Tuohy RHA (1894-1930) LETTER FROM AMERICA TO WILLIAM "BOSS" SINCLAIR, 1927 autograph manuscript letter, single sheet, folded signed Patrick Tuohy and dated 28 June 1927 17 by 25cm., 6.5 by 10in. One of Orpen's most distinguished protegés, Patrick Tuohy emigrated to north America in 1927 and died only three years later, cutting short a promising career. In all, about 200 works of his have been catalogued, consisting of drawings, watercolours and oil paintings. The letter, dated 28 June 1927, is written from South Carolina and extensively relates Tuohy's observations on the USA: "parties, fish fries and barbecues" and notes "the number of intelligent good looking girls. I would back them against the best in Europe". Tuohy's correspondent, William Sinclair, was one of two twin brothers who had an antiques business at 47 Nassau Street. An eccentric and colourful character, variously nick-named "Boss" or the "Beard" or "Sink", Sinclair's temperament was artistic rather than commercial and consequently as a dealer he was a failure but according to Sir William Orpen "as a friend he was a glorious success". He married Cissie Beckett (aunt of playwright Sam).
