NOTE

An entirely self-taught artist, Santo's work has been described by critics as `romantic primitivism' and `magical realism'. He was born in Corsano, Italy in 1893 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1913. He eventually settled in Vermont, becoming a lifelong resident and a full-time housepainter. He began his artistic career making designs and decorations in his spare time to please friends and family. He found great success locally and when he exhibited at the Rutland State Fair in 1937, his work attracted the attention of Walt Kuhn. More exhibitions followed and in 1939, he was included in the important show, "Unknown American Artists" at the Museum of Modern Art. After 1940, he became affiliated with the Marie Harriman and Macbeth Galleries.
