After a period of painting abstracts, Parvineh Etemadi began her second phase in 1968, a series of paintings executed on a rough cement base, employing a minimum of lines and colour. Many of these were mainly still lifes, formally drawing inspiration from Japanese woodcuts, their everyday subjects giving these works a sense of the familiar. At the same time, Etemadi worked in the same technique on a series of abstract works, which explored different colours and organic shapes.
