Lot 208: Paolo Fiammingo or Paolo Franceschi (Antwerp, ca. 1540-Venice, 1596) - The Judgment of Paris

The piece in question displays stylistic characteristics typical of Paolo Fiammingo, the name adopted by Pauwls Franck, a Flemish painter born in Antwerp around 1540. Fiammingo moved to Venice around 1570, where he lived and worked until his death in 1596. Specializing in landscapes with figures depicting mythological scenes, Paolo Fiammingo blended the influences of the Flemish style with the Venetian Mannerism of the late 16th century. This painting illustrates the moment when Paris, the Trojan prince, hands the golden apple to the goddess Aphrodite (Venus), proclaiming her the goddess of love and beauty. The scene features Mercury and Mars as witnesses, with Cupid at Venus's feet. The background is notable for its splendid landscape, with a dense forest opening to reveal a river. Within the river scene, Neptune is depicted navigating the waters, accompanied by two semi-nude female figures, likely Flora and Ceres. Professor Valdivieso highlights that, as with other works attributed to Paolo Fiammingo, there are indications of his disciples’ contributions to secondary details. However, this does not detract from the painting’s overall beauty and appeal. Its large dimensions and rich narrative make The Judgment of Paris a work of remarkable visual impact.
