Cette œuvre sculptée dans le marbre et représentant un homme nu retenant un cheval cabré est une interprétation des célèbres sculptures de Guillaume Coustou, les Chevaux de Marly, réalisées entre 1743 et 1745 pour orner le Bassin de l’Abreuvoir du Parc de Marly et aujourd’hui conservées au Louvre. Nicolas Sébastien Adam propose avec cette œuvre une version tout en verticalité. Le cheval semble s’élever vers les cieux, la crinière ébouriffée, la bouche hennissante, les naseaux et les yeux dilatés. L’homme, dans une nudité totale tente de maîtriser la fougue animale en le retenant par la bride. Collés corps à corps, ils paraissent ne faire qu’un, alors que la composition de Coustou présente un animal et un homme en deux entités distinctes. Notre artiste a retranscrit avec force la puissance musculaire de l’homme et de l’animal, ainsi que le combat qu’ils mènent; l’un pour regagner sa liberté, l’autre pour le maintenir en captivité. Il semble avoir été influencé, au-delà de Guillaume Coustou, par des exemples prestigieux dont le plus réputé est le Groupe des Dioscures, Castor et Pollux retenant des chevaux cabrés, placés devant le Palais du Quirinal à Rome qui à l’origine ornaient les thermes de Constantin. Au XVIIe siècle, le thème connut un fort intérêt auprès des sculpteurs œuvrant à Versailles. Le groupe des Chevaux du Soleil pansés par deux tritons de Balthazar et Gaspard Marsy réalisé en 1664-1666 pour le bosquet des Bains d’Apollon à Versailles présente cette même fougue animale et cette tension nerveuse palpable dans le regard du cheval; autre exemple, le haut relief des Chevaux du soleil, exécuté par Robert Le Lorrain vers 1737 pour l’Écurie de l’hôtel de Rohan à Paris. Membre d’une importante dynastie de sculpteurs d’origine lorraine, Nicolas ébastien Adam apprit son art auprès de son père Jacob Sigisbert Adam (1670-1747) à Nancy puis de son frère Lambert Sigisbert Adam (1700-1759) à Paris. Il séjourna à Rome de 1726 à 1734 et à son retour en France, travailla pour Louis XV à Versailles, pour le Bassin de Neptune avec Le Triomphe de Neptune et Amphitrite en 1740, la famille de Rohan à l’Hôtel de Soubise et les Bâtiments du Roi (pour la Chambre des Comptes à Paris, l’abbaye de Saint-Denis ou la Chapelle Royale de Versailles). Il fut reçu à l’Académie en 1762 avec Prométhée enchaîné, aujourd’hui au Musée du Louvre, chef-d’œuvre de la sculpture baroque parisienne. On retrouve toute cette nervosité, cette violence des musculatures et ce jeu de force qui est sensible dans notre œuvre. Influencé par le baroque italien, Nicolas Sébastien Adam appartient au cercle très fermé des sculpteurs les plus raffinés et les plus subtils de son temps, s’inspirant de la nature, étudiant les hommes et les chevaux pour en tirer toute l’humanité des sentiments.
