PAIR OF WILLIAM GARL BROWNE, JR (AMERICAN, 1823-1894) WASHINGTON, DC PORTRAITS, oil on canvas, depicting a distinguished lady and gentleman, she wearing a lace collar and black broach, inscribed "Painted by Wm. Garl Browne / Aug. 1886" and "Wm. Garl Bowne, pinxit / Sept. 1886" on versos, original gilt and gesso frames bearing Washington, DC labels.

Condition Report

Excellent overall condition with several minor paint touch ups, one very small patch, and a few areas of minor flaking, minor losses to frames.

Notes

William Garl Browne resided and worked in Washington, DC from 1878 to 1886. Before and after this period he worked extensively throughout the South, primarily in Virginia and North Carolina. His work is represented in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Virginia Military Institute, the Virginia Historical Society, and numerous other institutional and public collections.
