CATALOGUE NOTE

Nicolaes (Claes) Hals, who was one of the five sons of Frans Hals (1582/3-1666) who all became painters, specialized in genre- and landscape painting. In his landscapes he was clearly influenced by Jacob van Ruisdael (1599-1677), which can also be seen in the present landscape. The composition can be compared with that of another Dune landscape in the Munich art trade (see W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, Munich 1979, vol. I, no. 501, reproduced).
