CATALOGUE NOTE

Cornelis Delff was first taught by his father Jacob and then started working under Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem (1562-1638). From 1610 onwards he moved to Delft where he worked until the end of his life in 1643. After his teacher Cornelisz. van Haarlem, Delff was the first to produce kitchen still lifes in the style of the Flemish painter Pieter Aertsen (1507/8-1575) in Holland. The difference with Delff's kitchen scenes were that he focussed more on various kitchen utensils like pots and pans etc. instead of food, fruit and vegetables, as can also be seen in the present picture.
