Tojiro Oshita studied watercolor painting under Nakamaru Seijuro and Harada Naojiro in the late 19th century. In 1902, the year this work was painted, Oshita helped found the Western painting group Taiheiyo Gakai (Pacific Painting Society), along with fellow artists Yoshida Hiroshi and Nakagawa Hachiro. He was an important leader in the watercolor movement, serving as editor of the monthly magazine Mizue, and authoring an influential guide to watercolor painting.
