Item Overview

Description

This rare engraving is from the first edition of Thomas Osborne's A Collection of Voyages and Travels, Consisting of Authentic Writers in our own Tongue, which have not before been collected in English, or have only been abridged in other Collections. And continued with Others of Note, that have published Histories, Voyages, Travels, Journals or Discoveries in other Nations and Languages, relating to Any Part of the Continent of Asia, Africa, America, Europe ... Complied from the curious and valuable Library of the late Earl of Oxford .... The work was published in London by Thomas Osborne in 1745. Most of the maps that were published in this work were completed by Herman Moll.

This is an important collection of voyages with many relating to the Americas. The work was originally bound in two volumes known as the Harleian or Oxford voyages. They were compiled partly from the manuscripts in the collection of the Earl of Oxford. The work is generally considered the logical continuation of John and Awensham Churchill's travel anthology.

Provenance: Oliver Baron (noted from an armorial bookplate)
