Item Overview

Description

This poster was made in 1918 to promote the United War Work Campaign of November 11-18, 1918. The United War Work Campaign was an effort to raise $170,500,000 to provide entertainment for American troops abroad in World War I. Seven non-governmental organizations participated in this campaign: Young Men's Christian Association, Young Women's Christian Association, National Catholic War Council (with the Knights of Columbus), Jewish Welfare Board, War Camp Community Service, American Library Association and the Salvation Army. The campaign began in November 11th of 1918, on the day the war ended. However, fundraising continued as troops were to remain in France until well into 1919. This poster was commissioned by the National Catholic War Council and the Knights of Columbus. They were two different catholic organizations that decided to join forces during the war. The first was formed by priests and bishops, and the former by the laity. The Council was in charge of the organization, while the Knights brought people to help in the American camps in Europe. The Knights provided movies, literature, games, stationary and theatricals in their camps. They also accompanied the soldiers into battle, distributing tobacco, chocolates, soap and other articles. In the poster we a see a member of the Knights of Columbus in the front, recognizable by the KC in his jacket and hat, pointing at a soldier who is walking into battle. In the background we see more soldiers and the effects of explosions. Help us to help the boys was a clear statement of what the campaign was about. Burton Rice, born in 1894 in Illinois, designed the poster for the Council and Knights. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
