Item Overview

Description

Oil painting on canvas signed by Jean Daumier, French artist. This impressionist painting has carriages drawn by horses coming and going with passengers and people hustling throughout the new avenue around the railway station illustrating all signs of the time. Honore Daumier, 1808-1879, French printmaker, caricaturist, artist and sculptor used his art to comment on social and political life in 19th century France. In this painting, I believe that he is depicting the great city of Paris in the 1840s at a time when rail transport allowed an unprecedented flow of migrants into Paris attracted by employment in the new industries in the suburbs. The Industrial Revolution, the French Second Empire, and the Belle Époque brought Paris the greatest development in its history. From the 1840s, the city underwent a massive renovation under Napoleon III and his préfet Haussmann, who levelled entire districts of narrow, winding medieval streets to create the network of wide avenues and neo-classical façades of modern Paris. This program of "Haussmannization" was designed to make the city both more beautiful and more sanitary for its inhabitants, although it did have the added benefit that in case of future revolts or revolutions, cavalry charges and rifle fire could be used to deal with the insurrection while the rebel tactic of barricading so often used during the Revolution would become obsolete. As a graphic artist and painter, Daumier chronicled the impact of industrialization on modern urban life in mid-nineteenth-century Paris. Here, he amplifies the hustle and bustle of Paris.
