Item Overview

Description

Original ink drawing by American artist and illustrator Dorothy P. Lathrop (1891-1980). 7½x5, ink on art board. Signed "D.P. Lathrop" at lower right.
Typed label on back of board identifies the image as created for "Made-to-Order Stories", with the caption "Page 54 - The cat squalled and wriggled, and Aunt Paulina bounded up again." The animated scene depicts a young woman and a black cat. "Made-to-Order Stories" was written by Dorothy Canfield and first published in 1925. In 1929, the Newberry Medal was awarded to Rachel Field's "Hitty", illustrated by Dorothy Lathrop, and in 1937 Lathrop was the recipient of the first award of the Caldecott Medal for her "Animals of the Bible."
