Description

OOC- Portrait of Nathaniel Balch, Boston Hatter, by Edward Savage (PA/MA, 1761-1817), painted by order of John Hancock. Notes on back read 'Nathaniel Balch, 'The Hatter' (1735-1808), wife Mary Fletcher, painted by the artist Savage by order of Governor Hancock of Massachusetts' and 'Nathaniel Balch, brother of Joseph Balch (1738-1826), married Abagail Andebest 1760, Joseph Balch was ancestor of Dr. Joseph Balch of Providence'. In later gold molded frame, SS: 25" x 30", OS: 29" x 34", several punctures, the largest in crown of head, with copies of hand written letter of provenance dated Sept 18th 1808, Boston, and copies of the will metioning the painting and geneology will be included with the painting. From an East Winthrop, Maine home.
