Nanga School, late 19th century
Kakejiku, in ink and colour on silk, depicting nine kusagame (Chinese pond turtles) swimming beneath large overhanging branches of flowering white wisteria, signed Toko with two seals, with a certificate dated Taisho 14 (1925) by Teikoku Bijutsu Kantei Kyoku, authenticating the painting by the artist; with wood storage box. 156cm x 71cm (61 3/8in x 28in). Born in Edo, Oide Toko was a Nanga painter and pupil of Todo Ryoun (1809-1886). He received a silver medal at the Naikoku Kaiga Kyoshinkai in 1896 and exhibited his works at the Naikoku Kangyo Hakurankai and the Nihon Bijutsu Kyokai. Some of his works are in the Imperial Household collection.
