During an extended trip to Italy from 1826-28, Carl Osterley - who trained as a painter in the Dresden Academy and held a professorship in Göttingen - became aquainted with the Nazerene circle. In response to their ideas, Osterley preceded to inform himself about the early Italian painters, and their influence can be seen in his works. This image of Christ with the first Apostels is probably one of the first paintings exhibited by Osterley in the Hannoverschen Kunstverein, founded in 1832.
