Notes

Pakistani artist Nusra Latif Qureshi studied the complex art of miniature painting at the National College of Arts, Lahore. Gathering imagery from Mughal, Pahari and Rajasthani miniatures, the artist examines traditional motifs through contemporary juxtapositions conceived in vivid colour. While her work showcases the artist's exceptional draftsmanship and a mastery of the miniature form, its content offers post-colonial examinations of feminism, tradition and the manipulation of history through imperialism. Operative Gestures - II (Lot 1605) unifies seemingly unrelated elements into an abstracted yet balanced composition which plays with hierarchies of scale and engages with the rich, visual histories of South Asia.
