Notes

A fine, early photographic record of Norway by the two leading Norwegian landscape photographers of the day.

Knudsen was born in Odda, Norway and studied photography in Norway and Germany. He produced the largest series of Norwegian landscape photographs on record, numbering 9,000 before his retirement in 1898. Lindahl, born in Sweden, travelled extensively throughout Norway and was considered to be Knudsen's chief rival in landscape photography, copying Knudsen and Marcus Selmer's Romantic motifs of bygone culture, wild, untouched nature and its dwarfed, contemplative spectator.
