Notes

Literature:
F J Harvey Darton (ed.), The Seven Champions of Christensdom with illustrations by Norman Ault (London 1914) (ill. frontispiece).

Norman Ault was one of eight children, born in Birmingham to John K Ault. He attended the King Edward VI Grammar School where he studied art and architecture at the Art School at West Bromwich from the age of fifteen until 1900. The Artist magazine singled him out in the early 1900s as being a particularly talented artist. Not only was Ault a talented children's illustrator and writer, he was also a highly respected scholar in the field of Alexander Pope and receievd an honorary MA from Oxford for his research into the poet. Like Florence Mary Anderson, Ault has also fallen into relative obscurity.
