Late 19th/early 20th century
A two-fold screen, decorated in ink on a gold silk ground, depicting a solitary angler wearing a mino (straw raincoat) standing at the bank of a stream, fishing in the foreground, amidst mist-shrouded Autumnal landscape, the rainy weather indicated by swift washes applied with a wide brush, signed Bunkyo with two seals including Bunkyo. 172.5cm x 181cm (67 7/8in x 71¼in).

Born in Kyoto, Bunkyo studied painting under Shiokawa Bunrin (1801-1877) and Mori Kansai (1814-1894). Moving to Tokyo in 1889, he became a prize-winner at the first Bunten.
