Item Overview

Description

"Group of Fish" kakemono, watercolor on silk. Born in Osaka, Kanei studied painting under his father Nishiyama Hoen (1804-1864), was a Confucian scholar under Goto Shoin and served for the Banshu-Akashi Clan, now the Hyogo Prefecture. Purchased from London based Japanese art dealer David Newman in 1981; original purchase receipts available. In 1961 Mr. Newman joined London auction house Glendinnings specialising in Far Eastern Art. In 1965 he joined Spink & Son to found the Japanese department and in 1968 became an independent dealer specializing in Japanese paintings. He discovered and identified a host of works and encouraged collectors, particularly in America, to a love of Japanese art while helping young dealers to become established in the field.
