Nishiyama Kan'ei lived in Osaka and studied painting with his father Nishiyama Hoen (1804-1867), a well-known Shijo-school painter. Kan'ei was a respected Confucian literary scholar and at one time served as adviser to the daimyo of the Akashi domain.
