Notes

The son of Munich master Nikiforos Lytras, and himself a student at the Bavarian Academy of art, Nicholaos Lytras created an artistic bridge between Romanticism and Modernism in Greek painting.

Never previously offered at auction, Portrait of a little girl is a major re-discovery in Lytras' oeuvre. Considered one of the pioneers of Greek twentieth century art, Lytras along with Maleas (see lots 4,6 & 20) and Parthenis (see lots 8-10, 21 & 45) broke away from the strict rules of academic painting.

The present work will be included in the forthcoming monograph on Nikolaos Lytras currently being preparation by the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive (E.L.I.A.).
