Nikolai Pimenov was a sculptor and a professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. During his studies in Italy he developed his characteristically grand, monumental style of modelling and carving. He was commissioned to work on several public statues, such as the Paskevich monument in Warsaw, but also designed many commemorative medals, including this example.
