A pupil of L. Lagorio and A. Bogoliubov, the marine painter Nikolai Gritsenko accompanied the Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich on his tour to the East. In 1894, Gritsenko left the service of the Navy and was appointed painter to the Maritime Ministry. He produced numerous marine oils and watercolours depicting seascapes and the coastline of European Russia and Siberia.
