The son of a government official from Saratov, Grandkovsky studied painting under Evgraf Sorokin and Vladimir Makovsky at the Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He worked in oils, watercolour and pastel specialising in genre, portraiture and landscape. Together with the artist Konstantin Savitsky, he established a new art college in Penza, where he settled in 1897.
