Notes

The present lot is an exceptionally rare collection of nine illustrations depicting receptions, military and civil parades and appearances of Alexander III while he travelled from Moscow to Livadia between July and October 1872. His reception in Novocherkask in mid-August was particularly briliant as he was Commander-in-Chief of the Cossack armies based in that city. He stayed at the Ataman Palace and a magnificent ball was held in his honour at the Dvoryanskoe Sobranie on 13 August. These drawings were probably presented to the Emperor and kept in the library of the Winter Palace; the binding has the location label of one of the Imperial libraries but no bookplate.
