Notes

Hoffmann lived in France between 1775 to 1808, where he drew and engraved numerous military uniforms. He specialised in engravings of military, with drawn by him separately, according to who was posing for Hoffmann. His engravings are today very rare, many having burnt during the Commune in 1871 (R. Colas, Bibliographie générale du costume, Paris, 1933, I, pp. 535-6).
