Notes

Many studies of heads by this distinctive hand are known, but the artist's biographical details remain obscure. The only near-contemporary mention of his name occurs in Michel de Marolles' Livre de Peintres et Graveurs (Paris, 1672): 'Lanneau n'y faisoit pas bien des choses à fond, mais tout de fantaisie en divers posture.' Marolles (1601-1681) owned about two hundred drawings attributed to Lagneau.
