Notes

Born in Guernsey, Caire arrived with his family in Adelaide in 1858 and worked in the studio of the American photographer Townsend Duryea in King William Street. He first travelled in Gippsland, taking photographs of the landscape and portraits of the aboriginals in 1865. After establishing his own studio in Adelaide, he moved to the booming Victorian goldfields in the late 1860s, and specialised in wet plate scenic views. He moved to Melbourne in 1876, his Bourke Street studio specialising in mounted and bound Victorian views. In 1884, with the advent of the dry plate, he moved out of Bourke Street and worked out of his home in South Yarra, still producing Gippsland views (such as the present selection, stamped on the mounts with his South Yarra address), and working alongside his friend and colleague, J.W. Lindt.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
