Despite his Italian name, d'Ardia Caracciolo was born and brought up in Co. Waterford, Ireland. He was educated in England, and at the age of nineteen went to study in Florence at the suggestion of Pietro Annigoni. Brian Fallon comments 'Caracciolo was that rare entity, the really well-schooled and cultured academic (in the best sense), a fine craftsman and an urbane, versatile eclectic who could handle landscape, interiors, still life and portraiture with equal competence and even panache. Caracciolo was utterly a painter' (B. Fallon, The Irish Times, May 1990).
