Item Overview

Description

New York/Holland-Amerika Lijn. 1938.Ten Broek's poster for the Holland-American line uses a montage of symbols-the World Fair's Trylon and Perisphere, the Manhattan skyline, the U. S. and Dutch flags-to advertise excursions to the 1939 Fair. The ship is, appropriately, the Nieuw Amsterdam-one of the most beautiful ever built, according to some ship-lovers. She had just gone into service the year of this poster and was in Venezuela when the Germans overran Holland in 1940. She subsequently served as an Allied troop transport during the war. English (see PAI-XXII, 104) and German (see PAI-XXVIII, 450) versions of the poster also exist; this is the Dutch-language variant.
WILLEM FREDERICK TEN BROEK (1905-?)
