Venice: 1548, the first edition of Ptolemy to include regional maps of North America. 4 7/8 x 6 3/4 inches on 6 5/8 x 7 3/4 inch sheet. Later, skillful hand-colored. Also infuenced by discoveries of Jacques Cartier's 1st voyage (1534). First map of the North American East Coast to be issued in a published book, from the Carolinas to Labrador, and the first map to include Bermuda, discovered by Juan de Bermudez in 1515. The label for New England, ''Tierra de Nuremberg,'' appears here for the first time, derived from the Abnaki name for the area between two rapids. Burden 16. Nordenskjold 28, 40. Shirley 87.
