Item Overview

Description

A rare collection of ink wash portraits of English poets, four of the original set of five, depicting Charles Lamb, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth and Robert Southey (lacking Walter Savage Landor). Each is in an oval format, approx. 4-1/4"x 3-1/2", on paper approx. 11" x 8-1/2", each inscribed verso and paper taped into a mat but not framed. The annotation on verso indicates that the drawings were done after Hancock (Robert Hancock, 1730-1817). These drawings were made into photograveurs in 1891 and published in a folio by William George's Sons, Bristol. Copy No. 74 of the edition of 80 of this publication accompanies this lot, with the original tissue dust cover.

Condition Report

Expected age wear, paper tape on verso of the watercolors, acidic matting. Folio is in fair to good condition. Please examine the detail photographs carefully for condition.
