Ce buste en biscuit a été réalisé par la Manufacture impériale de Sèvres d’après
l’effigie officielle élaborée par Antoine-Denis Chaudet qui conçut également le portrait
officiel du Premier Consul puis de l’Empereur et obtint par décret impérial le privilège exclusif
de la production de ce portrait en matériaux divers : marbre, biscuit, plâtre ou bronze.
La Manufacture produisit des reproductions en biscuit à des fins diplomatiques. Il semblerait
qu’une centaine de bustes aient été réalisés et offerts à la famille impériale et aux grands
dignitaires, dont le nom était inscrit à la feuille d’or sur le côté. Notre exemplaire
provient de la prestigieuse collection des princes Murat.
