Notes

ANOTHER PROPERTY
Over the past few years Nalini Malani has worked in various mediums including oil, watercolor, mixed media and video installations. Her works are known for their politically charged content work whose dream-like imagery straddles issues of social, and political identity. Included in her paintings are Alice, from Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland, Medea from Greek myth and Sita from the Hindu Epics. The lives of women, the predicaments of gender, and the struggle for recognition and power feature prominently in these works but the figures appear in unexpected ways or contexts that reveal multi layered narratives. The works juxtapose images that can be simultaneously semi-autobiographical, mythical or political. 'Nalini Malani probes beneath surface appearances to locate essential truths of the human condition. She draws from within herself to expose the depths of human emotion--love, hate, fear, lust, pleasure, aggression, pain. ' (Susan Bean, Exposing the Source: the Paintings of Nalini Malani, Peabody Essex Museum Exhibition, 2006)
