Biography
Angel Chavez Lopez (1928 - 1995) Peruvian painter. Was one of the most important artists of the Generation of 1950. His work evolved from a realistic figuration to abstraction. He is noted for his lush colors. His brother Gerardo Chavez was another eminent painter. He completed his schooling in his hometown. Then he moved to Lima and entered the National School of Fine Arts in 1947, and he studied with Juan Manuel Ugarte Eléspuru and Sabino Springett, but reluctant to subject themselves to the academic molds, preferred to establish their own workshop to define his style. His first solo and group exhibitions presented in New York, Mexico and Santiago got good reviews. He was awarded the municipal contest in Lima for three consecutive years (1953, 1954, 1956). This past year he won the National Award "Francisco Laso". He was director of the Art School of Fine Arts in Iquitos 1968 to 1974. He participated in the I and II Bienal de Trujillo (1983-1985). He represented Peru in the Latin American Painting Contest at the OAS with the work titled pigeon Huntress (1993). His works are in museums and collections in Europe, America and Asia. They can also be seen in several museums in Lima and in a special room of the Museum of Contemporary Art Trujillo, owned by his brother Gerardo.
