The work was enormously influential, going through 35 editions in 5 languages in the 85 years after its first publication. Muller writes of the present edition that it "differs considerably from the German editions of 1553 and 1564. The description of America is quite different, and more ample, embracing for instance the voyages of Vespucius, Magallanes, etc." The woodcut illustrations in text comprise views and plans (including several full-page); historical and allegorical figures; portraits; animals and fabulous beasts (including a double page chart of sea monsters); battles; pastoral scenes; astronomical and geographical diagrams; coats of arms; etc. Muller 2204; Sabin 51382.
