Lot 76: Mrs. Susan Penelope Rosse (British, c.1652-1700) Louis XIV of Bourbon, King of France (1638-1715),

with long dark curling hair, wearing armour with gilt-bands over pink doublet, blue cloak secured at his shoulder with a gold brooch and white cravat held with gold pin, within gold and blue border on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book, gilt-metal mount oval, 33mm. (1 5/16in.) high Footnote: The present lot would appear to derive from one of the many enamel miniatures of Louis by Jean Petitot (cf. The Portrait Miniatures in the Collections of the House of Orange Nassau, p.223, no.221 (collection no. m485/3)). It shows the characteristic pouting lower lip and dark highlight of Rosse's work and also her ability to work on a very small scale.
