Executed circa 1843.
A preliminary sketch of this work from 1842 can be found in a sketchbook in the collection of the Heinrich-Heine-Institut, Düsseldorf. Oppenheim painted two more versions of this subject: the first, a grisaille from 1866, now in the collection of the Jewish Museum, New York, and a later one in 1871, currently in the collection of Ernest and Erika Michael, Seattle.
