Description

Morant, Philip (1700-1770) engravings by John Pine (1690-1756) The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords: representing the several engagements between the English and Spanish fleets in the memorable year 1588. London: J. Pine, 1739.
Copper-plate engraved map within an elaborate compartment, with a portrait of Charles Lord Howard of Effingham Lord High Admiral at the top, two inset images of skirmishes between the Spanish Fleet and the English Fleet just south of the Cornish and Devon coast, with the names of Spanish officers listed in the cartouche at the foot; hand-colored, matted, the central fold reinforced on the verso, with slight separation and loss of surface on the recto, printed on heavy paper, 26 1/4 x 16 1/2 in.
Pine's work is the only surviving representation of the original tapestries. The originals, designed by H.C. Vroom and woven by Francis Spring of Haarlem, were destroyed by fire in 1834.
