Description

* Moore (John Collingham, 1829-1880). "Self-portrait", charcoal and watercolour, on paper laid on card, head and shoulders portrait of a young man, several closed repaired tears, 66.5 x 52cm (26.25 x 20.5ins), gilt frame (damaged), with faint pencil inscription on the verso 'Portrait of John Collingham Moore - Painted by himself'. John Collingham Moore, a painter of portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, was from a Yorkshire family of artists. He entered the RA schools in 1850, and in 1858 he went to Rome, painting many views of the Roman Campagna, mostly in watercolour. After 1872 Moore turned his attention chiefly to portraits of children. Between 1852 and 1880 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Grosvenor Gallery, the Dudley Gallery and elsewhere. (1)
