Description

An original painting by costume designer Marco Montedoro depicting an ocean-inspired costume, complete with a coral fan and hat shaped like a ship. Signed (at a later date and somewhat shakily) by the artist in pencil at the figure’s feet. Gouache, acrylic, and pencil on paper.

Marco Montedoro (1887-1947) was born in Italy to a family of musicians. Regarded as a child prodigy, Montedoro was sent to Paris to study drawing and painting as a teenager. He established himself as an artist there, and remained in Paris until 1913 when he became the artistic director of the Metropol in Berlin. Montedoro moved back to Italy for the duration of WWI, where he designed posters for Italian theaters and cinemas. He returned to Paris after the war, and found work designing costumes for Le Palace, Les Ambassadeurs, Moulin Rouge, and Folies Bergère (including a 1927 production featuring Josephine Baker). During this period, he also designed productions in Milan, Berlin, London, St. Petersburg, and Poland.

In 1930, Montedoro relocated to New York City and designed for the Schuberts, including the 1941-1942 Broadway production of La Vie Parisienne. From 1932-1947, he worked alongside Vincinte Minelli designing sets and costumes for Radio City Music Hall, where Montedoro became head designer. Montedoro's talent is featured in Angelo Luerti's 2006 book Non Solo Erté - Not Only Erté, Costume Design for the Paris Music Hall 1918-1940.

Very good. Paper lightly age-toned and foxed with minor bumping to edges and corners. Evidence of yellowed adhesive on reverse.

Provenance

Before his death, Montedoro gave a significant collection of his designs to his close friend Hella Aronson (a German Jewish newspaper illustrator who had emigrated to New York from Nazi Germany before the beginning of WWII). The collection has remained with the Aronson family since that time.

In the event of any dispute between Bidders, the Auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful Bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after a sale, the Company's sale record shall be conclusive in all respects.

Buyer's Premium
The total Buyer's Premium is the sum of Second Story Books' 17% Buyer's Premium plus Invaluable's 3% service fee. The total Buyer's Premium of 20% is based on and added to the hammer price of all lots. The total purchase price is the sum of the hammer price and the Buyer's Premium of 20%.

Payment
The Purchaser is responsible for the full and timely payment of the total purchase price plus any state and/or local sales tax as required by law and any shipping and insurance charges. Payment is due within five calendar days of the invoice date. If payment is not made within this period, Second Story Books retains the right to charge the Purchaser's credit card on file on the sixth day for the full amount due.

The Company accepts the following forms of payment: checks in US dollars made payable to Second Story Books, major credit cards, bank transfers and PayPal payments sent to research@secondstorybooks.com.

Arbitration of Disputes
Any disputes between the Company and Bidder shall be resolved through mandatory binding arbitration under the rules of the American Arbitration Association. Arbitration will be conducted in Montgomery County, Maryland. Any award rendered may be entered as a judgment in any court of competent jurisdiction. The losing party at arbitration will bear the costs associated with the arbitration process, including, but not limited to, the arbitrator's fees. The Bidder is responsible for any fees incurred by the Company in collecting monies owed by the Bidder to the Company, including but not limited to, attorneys' fees.
