Notes

If we define the field of installations as dealing with spaces and architecture, the work of Monika Sosnowska is fundamentally centred on installation. The creation of architectural 'trompe l'oeil' is one of the features with which Sosnowska works: from labyrinths with doors, corridors whose walls narrow down, to all types of spatial architectural illusions. In this way, the artist not only plays with reality and fiction of spaces, but uses the visitor as a medium in her works. Her interventions in architectural reality are producing disturbances in the visitors' perceptions. Consequently, her installations are transformed into spatial surroundings that can be experienced in very different ways: according to the observer, through time, determined by the circumstances and the place where the installation is located. Supersam 1962-2006 is a collage based on photos of the opening (1962) and demolition (2006) of the modern building 'Supersam', the first self-service shop in Poland. It was taken down in 2006 due to more profitable investments.

Monika Sosnowska was resident artist at the Rijksakademie in 1999-2000.
She won the Baloise Art Prize (CH) in 2003 and the 11th Paszport Award (PL) in 2004.
