Description

Old Pretender (1688-1766), wearing gold-edged silver armour, white lace stock, blue sash of the Garter, his full-bottomed wig powdered on vellum, contemporary silver-gilt frame with scalloped border oval, 41mm. (1 5/8in.) high The present lot relates to a portrait, dated 1702, by Alexis-Simon Belle (1674-1734), husband of the miniaturist Anne Marie Belle. She was employed as a court miniaturist and copied many portraits of the Stuart family after her husband's paintings. From 1702 Belle and his wife lived at Saint-Germain and quickly became intergrated into the British community which had evolved there.
