From Tongxiang in Zhejiang province, the Monk Ming Zhong was originally named Yanzhong and had the surname Shi. He used the art names Daheng, Xiaoya, and Yinxu. He grew up in Lengyan Temple in Jiaxing and later went on to lead Shengyin Temple and Jingci Temple in Hangzhou. Emperor Qianlong awarded him the prestigious Purple Cassock three times. Ming Zhong was very fond of painting and seal carving. It was said that his landscape paintings were as meticulous as those of Huang Gongwang and as delicate as Ni Zan.
