Prospective purchasers are advised that several countries prohibit the importation of property containing materials from endangered species, including but not limited to coral, ivory and tortoiseshell. Accordingly, prospective purchasers should familiarize themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import this lot into another country.
It has been suggested that the present miniature derives from a painting by Henri-François Riesener (1767-1828) in the collection of the Hermitage Museum, in which the sitter is depicted without the diamond monogrammed badge of a lady-in-waiting. For another version of the present miniature, once in the collection of Princess M. A. Chernishev, and now in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, see L. I. Pevsner and I. M. Sakharova, Gosudarstvennaiia Tretiakovskaia Galereia. Portretnaia miniatiura XVIII - natsala XX veka, Moscow, 1997, p. 119, no. 172.
